Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. It was founded in 1989 by Edmund J. Alex, a Silicon Valley business man who developed age-related macular degeneration in his mid 70’s. Until his death in 2009 at the age of 94, Ed dedicated his life to raising awareness of a disease that was practically unknown. He began raising money for research and published a newsletter called the MAGNIFIER designed to inform and assist others with low vision to cope with the disease.

Since 2005, his former assistant, Liz Trauernicht, has overseen the Foundation as President with the very same enthusiasm and dedication.
Today the Foundation has relationships with key people and institutions in the field of vision research. Dedicated research scientists offer us exclusive interviews revealing their efforts to understand the mechanisms of macular degeneration. We record and post those interviews for public viewing. These video’s have become a unique record of scientific investigations that hold promise for a cure and encouragement to those impacted by all forms of macular disease.
